Seasonal Farmers Market
The Howard Lake Chamber of Commerce sponsors the farmers market, which takes place seasonally Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon in Memorial Park.
Shoppers have a wide selection of goods to choose from – and the list of vendors continues to grow. Myra Laway, who runs the market, hopes to increase vendors for the 2017 season. In 2016, the average number of vendors at the market each week was seven; however, some weeks the market saw as many as 12.
Handmade soaps, local produce, handmade jewelry, and locally-produced honey are just a few items that can be found among the vendors’ tables. A food truck, serving burgers and kabobs, was one feature of the farmers market in 2016. Laway hopes to grow the market even further, potentially adding other forms of entertainment to the market in 2017.
The market is set up near the playground in Memorial Park, so children can play while their parents shop. The park also has a large shelter, which allows the market to be open, rain or shine.
“Memorial Park has been a wonderful venue, because they have a huge shelter,” Laway said. “We set up under the shelter [when it rained] and all of the vendors were dry, and traffic still came through.”
In 2016, the market ran from June until September, and was open the first and third Saturday of each month. In September, the market was open every Saturday, due to popularity and plenty of additional stock from vendors.
